“At Magnushof, we have about 70 rehabilitation spots and 150 apartments for long-term care,” says Anja Dijkstra-Booij, Wellbeing Coordinator. “In our rehab department, we mainly support people recovering from surgery. In our long-term care units, residents live with dementia or other physical conditions.”
Every department at Magnushof has its own Bike Labyrinth, each serving a unique purpose. In total, there are 12 systems throughout the facility. “The physical therapists use virtual cycling as part of the rehabilitation process,” Anja explains. “In the somatic department, it helps residents create structure in their day, and in the psychogeriatric department, volunteers and caregivers cycle together with residents.”
Colleague Monique van Straaten plays an important role in supporting all e-health initiatives. “Monique keeps a close eye on what each location needs and ensures that the products are being used effectively,” says Anja. “She knows exactly where the needs lie and makes sure every tool is used to its full potential. She also organizes refresher workshops - for example, about Bike Labyrinth - so that everyone stays confident using it.”
Thanks to that support, residents at Magnushof are now cycling with enthusiasm. For many, Bike Labyrinth has become a regular part of their daily routine. “It’s really become indispensable here,” Anja says with a smile. “Our residents love being able to move in this way. Often, chairs are placed next to and behind the screen so everyone can take turns cycling. Together, they choose which routes to take and where to turn.”
In addition to physical movement, Bike Labyrinth also provides mental stimulation. “It’s really a win-win situation,” says Anja. “Residents stay physically active, broaden their world, and can do it all at their own pace.”
