"When new clients arrive, we talk with them. Together, we explore how we can best structure their day, for example, through our internal day care program. At the same time, we believe it's important that they maintain control over their own day," says Tess.
Bike Labyrinth plays a valuable role in this. Thanks to the pedal assistance on the bike, everyone can cycle along, regardless of physical limitations. "Most clients know exactly how Bike Labyrinth works and can easily get behind the bike," Tess continues. The system is located in a public space, making it easy for any resident to access it independently. "We've also added a few chairs. This way, clients can look at the routes together, and interaction naturally develops."
Tess enthusiastically explains that Bike Labyrinth is in constant use. "Almost every time I walk past, there's someone on a bike. For some, it's mainly about getting some extra exercise; for others, it's a way to add structure to their day."
Furthermore, Bike Labyrinth promotes social interaction. Clients from all departments use Bike Labyrinth, which fosters connection and makes it easier to chat.
A regular group of clients often cycles together and has started their own “cycling club.” They take turns behind the screen and follow each other's route from their chairs. “It's sometimes difficult for our clients to make spontaneous contact. Bike Labyrinth helps enormously in an accessible way to connect. It also ensures that our residents literally and figuratively leave their own department.”
Bike Labyrinth also offers excellent conversation starters for the care staff. “A conversation flows much more easily when the client is doing something at the same time,” explains Tess. “They're less focused on the conversation itself. And for me, it's a great opportunity to learn more about, for example, the environment in which someone grew up.”
