"It's as if they're getting to know their own surroundings all over again"

Frion is an organization that provides various forms of care for people with intellectual disabilities in the Northwest Overijssel region, in the Netherlands. Kim works at the Golfslag day center as a Work Support Coordinator, guiding, among other things, the client group in their daily activities and care needs. She also takes on other team tasks, including a focus on physical activity and healthier living.

Accessibility as an advantage

Because the day center's client group is very diverse, the team benefits enormously from a tool that can be used in many different ways. "We use Bike Labyrinth for a wide range of purposes: for relaxation, to stay active, and sometimes together with the physical therapist," says Kim. She especially highlights accessibility as an advantage. "Thanks to how easy it is to use, many clients can use Bike Labyrinth independently. Usually we just turn on the system or select the route for them, and then we don't need to stay with them. That's convenient for staff, but also for the client, who gets a bit of space to be alone for a while. It gives them a sense of freedom too," Kim explains.

External motivation

Although physical activity is important, it presents a challenge for the day center's client group. Many clients lack the motivation to be active on their own, which means Kim and her colleagues have to actively provide that motivation. "When I want to offer a client movement with Bike Labyrinth, I ask if they'd like to go cycling for a bit. I prefer to say 'cycling' rather than 'exercising,' because that often sounds a lot more appealing to clients. You can really tell it gives them more motivation," Kim explains.

Some clients choose to cycle to Zwolle or Dalfsen, even though those places are already so close by. But once they're cycling, they notice new things again. It's as if they're getting to know their own surroundings all over again.

Nearby and far away

Thanks to the broad target group, the use of Bike Labyrinth varies greatly from person to person. Some clients cycle routes close to home, but many seize the opportunity to travel further away. "There's a gentleman who used to travel a lot. He now uses Bike Labyrinth to revisit places he once traveled to. Some clients also cycle back to their hometown or to a place where they lived for a long time. It really differs from person to person, which is why it's great that we offer so many routes," Kim concludes.
