Collecting virtual kilometers at the DKV Residence in Münster – Bike Labyrinth brings motion to life!

The DKV Residence in Münster, Germany, lives by the motto "movement is everything". They offer all kinds of ways for seniors to stay active and to have fun. The residence has a cool concept: seniors live independently but also have a community. They can do things like self-defense classes, aqua fitness, Nordic walking, or even just take a stroll with a rollator — something for everyone! Since Münster is Germany's biggest bike city, it's no surprise that they've added Bike Labyrinth to their activities. The virtual cycling program has been a hit with the seniors for the past year and seems to be a perfect match!

Of course, we had to find out more about this location, which is why we visited them to learn more about their experience. The tour of the residence was very welcoming and took place in beautiful springlike weather. Not only the homely inner courtyard, but also the many colorful and planted balconies contributed to the communal atmosphere. Bike Labyrinth has also found an ideal place in the DKV Residence: in the in-house fitness room in front of two large windows, the virtual cycle routes offer plenty of topics of conversation for the seniors.

Münster virtually cycles ahead

Münster is not only the most popular destination for cyclists in reality: the virtual routes are also unchallenged in first place at the DKV Residence at Tibusplatz. A close look at the statistics of Bike Labyrinth shows that this is by far the favorite route of the senior citizens. In Münster alone, the residents have already cycled 30 hours since they received Bike Labyrinth a year ago. The virtual route is a big hit, especially because it goes right past the residence - so the seniors can even visit their home virtually! But not only Münster is popular among the citizens: Larger German cities, such as Hamburg or Bremen, follow the bicycle city on the podium.

The mileage alone shows how well the device motivates in terms of mobilization: Around 6000 kilometers were covered on Bike Labyrinth within a year.

Motivation in motion

The seniors at the residence greet each other in the morning saying things like; "I've already been to the Pyramids of Giza today" or "Where else can you ride a small yellow boat on the Grand Canal in Venice?". But not everyone wants to virtually travel to uncharted waters: one senior citizen from Münster has family in Seattle, USA, and she used Bike Labyrinth to check out her daughter's new life from afar - without the jet lag! The seniors at the DKV Residence have a lot of fun exploring the virtual world through the cycling routes. The daily exercise also helps them to stay mobile and, most importantly, to make exercise a regular habit. Bike Labyrinth is a great way to get residents moving and having fun. The realistic experience and the chance to explore new places keep people coming back for more. "Five minutes quickly become 10 and 20 minutes," reports Mr. Geissler, Health coach of the DKV Residence.

Bike Labyrinth gets people talking

Bike Labyrinth not only awakens the motivation of the residents, but gets people talking. The virtual cycling routes get seniors sharing stories and talking about their experiences. The fitness room in the DKV Residence, where Bike Labyrinth is set up, is the perfect spot for this. While some residents ride the virtual routes, other athletic seniors talk about their own experiences. They talk about landmarks they know, funny vacation stories, or memories that come up because of the places on the virtual routes. One senior citizen from Münster said, "My husband and I got married in Frankfurt and lived there for a long time. I want to remember the good old days." Thus, Bike Labyrinth is like a virtual photo album and diary that brings out the best and funniest stories from all corners of the room.
