The Christophorus Therapy and Health is a facility of the Christophorus Clinics, which is located in Nottuln, Dülmen and Coesfeld. With a total of four specialist areas, including ergotherapy and physiotherapy, the team from North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany offers a comprehensive and diverse range of treatments. The main focus of the therapy are elderly patients, who often suffer from multiple illnesses at the same time. The goal in Nottuln is to optimize the independence and mobility of the geriatric patients and thereby even enable the return to their own home.
The Christophorus Therapy and Health team were impressed with the virtual routes right from the Bike Labyrinth trial period. It quickly became clear: "We need Bike Labyrinth," said Linda Bolz, head of ergotherapy in Nottuln.
In Nottuln, patients can experience virtual adventures with Bike Labyrinth, either with a therapist or together with other patients from the Christophorus Clinic. To encourage social interaction, the team has also installed a second exercise bike next to Bike Labyrinth. This not only makes joint trips possible, but above all, new conversations and social contacts. “The seniors choose a route together and chat about past experiences during their ride with Bike Labyrinth”, Linda explains. "I've been there on vacation before" or "I studied here" are common memories that are awakened by our virtual cycling. "The virtual routes encourage dialogue between people who otherwise might never have talked to each other," says Ilka Stumpe, head of physiotherapy at the Therapy and Health facility in Nottuln. “Bike Labyrinth invites seniors to chat and travel internationally, making it the ultimate icebreaker.”
“Mobilization and rehabilitation are a key part of our work,” Linda and Ilka explain. “Geriatric patients ride the virtual routes to experience a highlight of their day,” as Linda says. Compared to their traditional activation programs the cognitive stimulation makes Bike Labyrinth a completely new experience. In Nottuln, new adventures and journeys are undertaken every day as part of mobilizing and activating the seniors. “Bike Labyrinth is used a lot and really liked,” the heads of physiotherapy and ergotherapy report.
““Especially geriatric patients are leaving their familiar surroundings less and less often. It is a great opportunity to refresh memories and virtually visit work or the family home.””
For the Nottuln team, Bike Labyrinth means more than just mobility and regular activation. Linda sees Bike Labyrinth as an opportunity not only for the physical health but also for the mental health of the seniors. “Patients who can no longer leave their homes and people with depression find motivation to get up and move every day with Bike Labyrinth." This is how Bike Labyrinth becomes an integral experience that promotes body, mind and interpersonal connections through playful and adventurous movement.
