Fall prevention: does cycling improve balance?
March 4, 2025

Bike Labyrinth is used in various care facilities to keep older adults moving in an accessible and enjoyable way. But does it actually contribute to fall prevention? The short answer is: it certainly helps! Balance exercises focus specifically on gait and coordination training to reduce fall risk. Cycling, especially on a stable seated bike with Bike Labyrinth, does not train balance directly. Still, there are indications that it can have a supportive effect.

What does science say?

Research shows that even low-threshold cycling on a seated bike with minimal resistance can positively impact motor coordination and balance – both important for walking and performing daily activities. While a direct impact on fall prevention has not yet been proven, evidence suggests that overall fitness, gait coordination and quality of life do improve.

One study also shows that both cycling and exergames involving stepping movements contribute to better general fitness and walking coordination. Step-based exergames have a slightly greater effect, but cycling is an excellent alternative for those who cannot or do not wish to walk. Resistance training on a seated bike can also help build muscle strength, which is essential for standing up and maintaining stability.

Why cycling is still a smart choice

Although Bike Labyrinth does not offer direct balance training, it can certainly contribute to overall fitness and mobility in older adults. The combination of movement and cognitive stimulation (through the virtual cycling experience) can motivate users to remain active longer. This supports better endurance, coordination, and potentially an indirect reduction in fall risk.
