Stockholm is the capital and the biggest city of Sweden. It is built on a wetland area, and thereby called the 'Venice of the North'. Stockholm is spread across 14 islands on the coast in the southeast of Sweden at the mouth of Lake Mälaren. The city is situated amid 24,000 islands. The name Stockholm is a aggregation of the words for wood (stock) and island (holm).
The oldest part of Stockholm is called the Old City (Gamla Stan), characteristic for its narrow streets with traditional ochre yellow and red painted houses. The oldest building in Stockholm is the Riddarholms church, build in the 13th century. This is where the Swedish monarchs were burried.
You can cycle along the old city Gamla Stan and along the Royal Palace.
