New York, also known as "the Big Apple" or "the city that never sleeps", is one of the most important cities in the world. It consists of five boroughs, created by the fusion of different formerly indepent cities and counties like Brooklyn and Queens. While it is not the capital of New York State, it is considered a cultural capital of the United States, and the world.
New York City lies at the mouth of the Hudson River. Originally it was the home of Native Indians until European explorers started settling and trading there in the 16th century. In the 17th century the settlement was named "New Amsterdam". Shortly after it was captured by the British and named after the Duke of York: New York City was born. Manhattan is the most populated borough and world famous for its skyscrapers, Central Park, Broadway, as well as world class universities and museums. Manhattan is home to many different and distinct neighborhoods with rich cultural histories like Chinatown, Greenwich Village, Little Italy and Soho.
